TCA Announces Scholarship Recipients
And the winner of the first-ever Mac McCormick Memorial Scholarship is . . . Lacie Livingston. Ms. Livingston, who is connected to the trucking industry through Prime, Inc., earned $5,000 toward the 2007-08 academic year.
Truckload Carriers Association's (TCA) scholarship program expanded from 18 to 25 scholarships this year, bringing the total amount awarded to $55,500. Besides Ms. Livingston's award, TCA offered the Thomas Welby and Kai Norris Scholarships, both worth $3,000; the Truck Writers Scholarship, worth $2,500; and 21 other scholarships, worth $2,000 each.
This year's scholarships were awarded on the basis of need, academic excellence, major field of study, and quality of an assigned essay. Special consideration is given to those students studying in the field of transportation and business. Any college junior or senior in good standing, who is the child, grandchild, or spouse of an employee or an employee of a trucking company, or the child, grandchild or spouse of an independent contractor or an independent contractor affiliated with a trucking company and attending an accredited four-year college or university is eligible.
Each applicant's essay was based on the theme, "Trucking's impact on my life . . ." The best ones told stories through the eyes of family and drove home messages on the importance of trucking; personal connections with the industry through parents, relatives, neighbors and friends; and confirmed the rewards of being a part of the trucking industry family.
Don Orr, Chairman of the TCA Scholarship Fund, said, "The scholarships will enable students to have an important impact upon the trucking industry," and encouraged more members and participants to become involved. Orr cited, in particular, "the generosity of the sponsors who made gifts available for us to auction off in the live and silent auctions that we hosted at our annual meeting last March in Las Vegas." Noting that the Scholarship Fund is one of TCA's most honored programs, Orr said, "Over the coming months TCA will be contacting its members to participate in the 2008-09 Scholarship Fund. With the continued support of our members - donors and suppliers - we aim to grow the number of scholarships again for next year."
