TCA’s David Heller Named New Fleet Owner Safety Columnist
5/5/2009

Alexandria, Virginia:

David Heller, director of safety and policy for the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), has been named as the safety columnist for Fleet Owner magazine, effective Monday, May 4, 2009. His column, entitled “Safety 411,” will debut in the June 2009 issue.

Fleet Owner is very excited to bring Dave Heller’s expertise and broad experience to our readers,” said Jim Mele, editor-in-chief for the magazine, which provides information about operations, vehicle maintenance, industry regulations and information management technology to executives and managers of commercial trucking fleets operating five or more vehicles. “Safety is a chief concern for everyone in trucking, and having a monthly column from a safety expert of Dave’s stature adds a valuable new resource for our audience and for the entire trucking industry.”

Kevin Burch, TCA chairman and president of Jet Express, Inc., said, “Dave Heller is considered one of the leading experts on truck safety issues. He is no newcomer to safety policy and how it affects trucking companies, both large and small. He is considered the ‘go to’ person by many agencies and is well respected among his peers. Heller looks outside the box on safety issues to make sure the right thoughts are conveyed.”

Heller says he will rely on TCA’s Safety & Security Division to provide direction, topics, solutions and suggestions that will drive the content of the column. He also plans to gather material from various industry safety events, including the Safety & Security Division’s upcoming annual meeting, to be held May 17-19, 2009, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Heller’s trucking industry background includes responsibility for communicating and interpreting all industry-related regulations (safety, legislative, etc.) for the Truckload Carriers Association. Previously, he spent six years in the trucking safety arena with the American Trucking Associations (ATA), focusing on programs such as the National Truck Driving Championships and the establishment of safe driving programs for motor carrier members. He is certified as a director of safety from the North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI) and sits on the Board of the NATSO Foundation, the non-profit subsidiary of NATSO, Inc., which represents America’s truck stops and travel plaza industry.

Chris Burruss, president of the Truckload Carriers Association, said, “Dave Heller has proven his knowledge of the safety and policy issues confronted by the trucking industry. He understands that safety in our industry today is more than just dollars and cents; it’s also about our obligation as stewards of safety on our nation’s highways. For these reasons, Dave’s contributions to Fleet Owner will benefit not only TCA members, but the entire scope of the trucking industry.”
