Keith Tuttle, Founder of Motor Carrier Service, LLC, Elected 2015-16 Chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association
Keith Tuttle, founder of Motor Carrier Service, LLC (MCS), of Northwood, Ohio, has been elected the 2015-16 chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). After the vote by TCA’s Board of Directors earlier this week, he was sworn in last night as part of the organization’s Annual Convention at the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, Florida.
Like many of TCA’s chairmen before him, Tuttle hails from a family trucking background. He was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. After graduating from Defiance College, he joined his father and brother in running the fledgling Motor Carrier Service, a small company that offered truck equipment and trucking services. MCS struggled for some time after deregulation in 1980, but finally got its operating authority in 1986 and became a transportation broker in 1990. Since then, MCS has shown steady increases in both revenue and number of trucks, which
Tuttle modestly attributes to an outstanding general manager and his team. Today, MCS operates about 100 trucks and has been named one of the Top 20 Best Fleets to Drive For, five years in a row (including 2015). It has also received a number of other prestigious awards, including being named Carrier of the Year by several of the Fortune 500 companies that use its services.
In 2014, MCS was sold to a much larger carrier, although Tuttle’s work with the company continues. With the purchase, he is now able to spend more time on industry issues as well as charitable causes.
Tuttle has been active on many of TCA’s committees, including chairing the Highway Policy and Financial Oversight & Long-Range Planning committees. He has also participated in the Independent Contractor Practices Policy, Membership, Recruitment & Retention Human Resources, Regulatory Policy, and Communications & Image Policy committees, as well as the Small Carrier Management Panel and TCA’s Benchmarking Program. As a member of the organization’s executive committee and board of directors, he has held the positions of secretary, treasurer (twice), first and second vice chair, and at-large officer. He is a past chairman of the Ohio Trucking Association and a past chairman of the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) Small Carrier and Image & Communication committees.
Locally, Tuttle has been deeply involved in The Masonic and Shrine Fraternity as well as The Shriners Hospitals for Children. In 2014, he served as chairman (Potentate) for the 1,800 Shriners in northwest Ohio. Whenever possible, he volunteers to transport children to area hospitals in Pennsylvania, Ohio, or Illinois. He enjoys golfing, fishing, and scuba diving and in the past was a volunteer firefighter, advanced emergency medical technician, and member of a Search and Rescue Underwater Team.
As he steps into the top leadership role of TCA, Tuttle will be pressing forward with the many trucking image programs as well as educational and networking offerings that are specified in the organization’s strategic plan. Under the guidance of TCA’s officers, and with the expertise of the association’s small, but mighty staff, the group will continue to build on its highly visible Highway Angel program, as well as its partnerships with Wreaths Across America, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree project, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s Wall That Heals. It will also continue to grow Truckload Academy’s education and training offerings, which currently include on-demand conference sessions, workshops, live and recorded webinars, certifications, and Driver Connect, a newly launched, online learning platform.
Tuttle strongly believes in the value that TCA’s offerings can bring to the membership. He will work to ensure that current and prospective members are aware of the tremendous resources available to them.
“Is it just coincidence that many of the same carriers who participate in TCA’s webinars are also the same carriers nominated by their own drivers for Best Fleets to Drive For?” he asked convention attendees in his chairman’s acceptance speech.
He continued: “These carriers also compete in our safety contests, haul for Wreaths Across America, and help structure many of TCA’s best programs. Is it also a coincidence that these same carriers are considered amongst the safest and most profitable fleets in the country? I think it’s fair to say there is a reason for all of these things to go hand-in-hand. It’s intentional; it’s proof that there is a way to have a great business plan; and it’s simply the savvy thing to do!”
Tuttle will lead TCA until the next Annual Convention, scheduled for March 6-9, 2016, at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The following individuals were elected to assist him:
• First Vice Chairman: Russell Stubbs, Chairman, FFE Holdings, Weatherford, Texas
