TCA Helps Defeat Bill Allowing States to Increase Weight Limits for Truck
Association’s Highway Policy Committee actively conveyed its opposition on behalf of TCA’s membership
On Tuesday, September 15, TCA’s Highway Policy Committee convened via conference call to discuss a bill that was introduced by Congressman Reid Ribble (R–Wis.) called the SAFE Trucking Act. Also known as the Safe, Flexible, and Efficient (SAFE) Trucking Act, the bill contained language that would allow individual states to decide whether or not they want to allow freight shipping trucks to carry a maximum of 91,000 pounds with the addition of a sixth axle, up from the current 80,000-pound standard.
As a result of the call, the committee, which followed TCA’s official policy on Size and Weight, decided to oppose this proposed bill and voice its opinion through a letter to Representative Ribble and members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Since that original letter, TCA has been actively engaged in stating its opposition to HR 3488 by communicating its position in numerous industry trade publications, on Capitol Hill, and even over the airwaves on Mark Willis’ Road Dog Trucking News. While TCA was not shy about its position in this bill, its language recently appeared as an amendment in the House language for long-term Highway Reauthorization. On Monday, in an effort to educate the full House of Representatives on this issue, TCA forwarded its opposing position on HR 3488 to the office of every Representative in the House.
“As a result of the tremendous work by our members and staff, I am happy to report that late yesterday afternoon, the House voted 187 – 236 against adding the proposed language to a six-year bill and rejected the provision that would allow the 91,000 lb./6-axle configuration on our nation’s Interstate System,” Keith Tuttle, TCA’s chairman, told TCA’s members.
