Anna Kreis, Morengo, IA Don Hummer Trucking
TCA Scholarship ($2,500) My mother has been working at Don Hummer Trucking in Oxford, Iowa for about ten years now. When I was younger I didn’t think much of this, but as I’ve grown older I realize just how important her job is. As a receptionist she helps truck drivers around the country contact their supervisors, or help them get messages back to family members. Since my mother has this close contact with the world of trucking it has given my family a unique understanding and appreciation for the services that it provides. Next year I am going to be a senior at Concordia University Nebraska. I have done a lot of traveling which has given me more experience with driving near the large tractors and trailers. I see just how much the trucking industry moves merchandise around our country helping our economy spread its resources to as many people as possible. This summer I am working with Don Hummer Trucking in their mechanics shop by answering phone calls and running small errands. I am looking forward to getting a better understanding of the mechanics behind these sixteen wheelers and maybe picking up a few “diesel mechanics’ terms” along the way. I never would have thought my life would be so influenced by the trucking industry before I took the time to recognize just how involved this industry really is. Without the generosity of all the people involved in this industry we wouldn’t have any of our modern necessities, food, jobs, or even large amounts of roads around the country. Before my mother started working in this industry I would have been one of the people that took the trucking industry for granted, but now I have a deeper appreciation for all of the work that this industry does for our country.
