When I was a little kid the only thing I ever wanted to play with were my toy trucks. I never had an appreciation for the trucking industry when I was little like I do now. Because my dad manages the human resources, driver recruiting and safety departments for American Central Transport Inc, I have found a new appreciation for truck drivers. To me, when I was little, trucks were the cool things to play with. It wasn’t until recent years that I started to understand the major importance of the trucking industry. I have come to realize that the trucking industry is truly the backbone of our current economy. The trucking industry has had an effect on almost everything we enjoy on a day-to-day basis. The simplest things we enjoy on a daily basis have come to us by truck drivers. Something that many people do not realize is the fact that these truck drivers have given up a lot in order to do the job they do. They are away from their families and homes for long periods of time, often working very long hours in order to get the job done. Because my dad manages the human side of this business I have been able to see a unique side of the industry. My dad often counsels drivers and office support staff that are dealing with marital, health, financial, and other stressful situations. Not only do drivers have to deal with these issues, but also because of the recent recession, the trucking industry has lowered driver miles as well as pay, and some companies have even gone out of business. I have learned a lot about how drivers have given up a lot for our country as well as myself because of my dad’s position at ACT. |
