Reflecting back upon my scholarship essay written last year, I realize how incredibly life altering a year can be. My family has always resided in a suburb of Allentown, Pennsylvania, the birthplace and home of Mack Trucks, Inc., renown for excellence in the trucking industry. My Dad, who celebrated his 30th anniversary with the company in August, worked summers at Mack before graduating from college and began his career there upon graduation. He has been a proud Mack employee all of his adult life, and in his current position maintaining parts levels for the OE Aftermarket Division, he demonstrates enormous regard for its customers. His department is so on top of its game that in 2008 it was recognized as Number One by JD Powers and Associates for customer satisfaction. Last August, my Dad and our family received the news that Volvo Trucks, Mack’s parent company, is closing Mack World Headquarters in Allentown and transferring its departments to Greensboro, NC. While every community in America has its major employers, for Allentown, Mack is iconic. “Built Like a Mack Truck” may be a marketing slogan for a brand, but for Allentown, it is a mantra for the city’s identity. The famous Mack Bulldog is as much a symbol of our community as it is of the roadway work horses the company produces. My Dad has elected to transfer to Greensboro and will continue his loyalty to the Mack brand and its customers. This will be a tough personal transition for three generations of my family, so I must say that this development has given this year’s essay another perspective. I appreciate more than ever this scholarship opportunity and my father’s employment in the trucking industry that has been financially supportive of my education. My hope is that the economy will rebound in a way that will keep this vital industry rolling for years to come. |
