Size and Weight

Background

The size and weight of trucks allowed on the interstate highway system is governed by federal law. The current gross vehicle weight limit is set at 80,000 pounds. Additionally, federal law prohibits states from imposing length limits of less than 48 feet for trailers. State laws governing size and weight for roads that are not part of the interstate highway system vary depending on the state and the type of road. States may grant special permits for larger or heavier trucks on an as-needed basis.
