Sandra BoydstonSandra Boydston When I was in high school, I tested for the military. I did not know until I signed the papers that my recruiter enlisted me as a Transport Operator. It seems odd to me now that he recruited a small 5’2”, 85 pound girl to drive five tons and 22 ½ ton LVSs. I had to place a backpack behind me to reach the pedals, but I passed every test the Marines threw at me and received every license they had except for the wrecker model of the LVSs. I was certified for the single trailers and doubles. But while I was away, my mother was home alone working a job she hated as a computer programmer. Raising me alone, my mother and I had a rough relationship at times. After watching me succeed in driving trucks, she decided to become a truck driver herself. She left her job and moved into my extra bedroom while she went to trucking school. Now I have settled into an office job and she is driving trucks. Trucking has brought her happiness as she follows her dreams to travel the country. I see her when she passes through and she gets to spend quality time with her grandson. |
