2002 Photo Contest Winners
The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is pleased to announce
the grand prizewinner of the 6th annual Truck Driver Photo
Contest is Larry Fulgham, company driver for Wal-Mart Transportation
of Bentonville, Arkansas. The contest, sponsored by S-Line,
Inc. and RPM Magazine recognizes talented truck drivers who
are also amateur photographers.
Grand Prize Winner:
Larry
Fulgham, company driver for Wal-Mart Transportation of
Bentonville, Arkansas.
Prize: $1,000 + photo featured on the front cover
of RPM Magazine
Fulgham, who lives in Stigler, Oklahoma, has been driving
for twenty years and is an avid photographer who has repeatedly
placed in the top six in the photo contest. He enjoys taking
photographs and showing them to friends and his favorite places
to shoot while on the road are Monument Valley, Arizona, and
Yosemite National Park. His award-winning photo shows lush
green hills, pink flowering trees and a perfect blue sky off
I-5 near Frazler, California.
2nd Place Winner:
K.
Colin Robertson of Salt Lake City, Utah, a company driver
for Pride Transport of Salt Lake City.
Prize: $750 + photo featured in RPM Magazine
Robertson originally took this photo on Highway 191 in Moab,
Utah as a submission for Pride Transport's calendar contest.
Robertson is a self-proclaimed amateur photographer who enjoys
driving through and photographing southeast Utah. His winning
photo portrays the complimentary colors of his truck in front
of a breathtaking sandstone background.
3rd Place Winner:
Milo
Von Strom of Virginia, Minnesota, Von Strom and his wife
are company drivers for Halvor Lines of Superior, Wisconsin.
Von Strom's winning photo shows his white truck against vibrant
orange, yellow, and green fall foliage. Both Von Strom and
his wife, Laura Thelen enjoy taking pictures while on the
road.
Prize: $500 + photo featured in RPM Magazine
4th Place Winner:
Gary
Wyatt of Gila Bend, Arkansas, a driver with Kennedy Inc.
of Romeoville, IL.
The winning shot is a double exposure that he took sitting
on a freeway exit in North Nevada. Wyatt used a flashlight
to illuminate the truck against an enormous full moon and
a bright blue sky making this one of the most beautiful shots
submitted to the contest.
Prize: $100 + photo featured in RPM Magazine
5th
Place Winner:
Jaime Licon of El Paso, Texas, a company driver for
Contract Freighters Inc.
Licon came upon this winning photo quite by accident; he
found an old Los Angeles Olympics Cannon camera from 1984
in his truck and took this photo to see if it still worked.
To his surprise the camera did work and the photo that emerged
shows Licon's red and white truck contrasting with majestic
charcoal and white mountains in Mammoth, California.
Prize: $100 + photo featured in RPM Magazine
6th
Place Winner:
Scott Windham of Pecos, Texas, an owner-operator
who is leased to Contract Freighters Inc. of Joplin, Missouri.
Windham took the patriotic shot of three rodeo clowns atop
a truck during a 4th of July parade in his hometown of Pecos,
TX because, he explained, he simply "thought it would
work." Windham takes many photos when driving and is
especially fond of shooting scenery including mountains and
sunsets.
Prize: $100 + photo featured in RPM Magazine
In addition to the six primary winners, four honorable mentions
($50 prize each) were awarded:
Honorable
Mention:
Crystal Kleweno of Spokane, Washington.
Kleweno, who drives for Hatfield ENT of Spokane, Washington,
submitted a photo of firefighters responding to a truck fire
that she took at a travel center on Highway 80 in Iowa. The
photo's bold, bright colors and crisp lines intrigued the
judges.
Honorable Mention:
Ian
G. Narita of Grovetown, Georgia.
Narita is a company driver with KLLM Transport of Jackson,
Mississippi, who took a photo of his truck at a service station
in Troutman, North Carolina. The photo brings the viewers
attention to the interesting vertical and horizontal lines
created by the trucks fueling at the service bay.
Honorable Mention:
Kendra
D. Synnestvedt of Eddington, Maine.
Synnestvedt, who drives for R.E.M. Transport, Inc. of Calais,
Maine, submitted a well-composed photo of her truck under
a low railroad bridge. She explained that she took the photo
after realizing that her only way out of a railroad tie loading
yard was under the small bridge, which her stacks barely cleared.
Honorable Mention:
Diane
Wood of Elgin, Illinois.
Wood, a company driver for Bitterroot International of Missoula,
Montana, took a photo of her two dogs in the window of the
truck she and her boyfriend team drive. It was not until after
the photo was taken that Wood realized one of the dogs was
waving, she titled the photo "Hi There."
