In 2021, TCA chatted with Bill Webb, a 30-plus year industry executive, formerly the executive director at the Texas Motor Transportation Association (TXTA), who spearheaded this initiative.

The national campaign came about in the early ‘90s when Webb was in the driver retention department at FFE Transportation Services, a for-hire carrier based in Lancaster, Texas.

Fast forward a year later to 1995, and TCA’s former president Lana Batts, knew this was an initiative worth being a part of.

“Bill’s vision was simply amazing, and the industry embraced it,” she shared. “It’s great to see how the week has morphed into something that is larger than any of us involved – a true success.”

Historic Events

Throughout the past decade, TCA, alongside its state association partners, hosted free driver health fairs at select TravelCenters of America/Petro locations, nationwide. Thanks to our partners, blood pressure tests, Glucose screenings, as well as vision and hearing tests were available for professional truck drivers.

Most recently, TCA and its sponsor Tenstreet hosted a special hour-long segment on the Dave Nemo Show (SiriusXM Channel 146) at 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. In a year like none other, 2020 required events to be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the show, professional truck drivers tuned in to:

  • Hear numerous “Thank You” messages geared toward the driver population from television entertainers and well-known musicians;
  • Enter into a raffle to win giveaways; and
  • Hear a special announcement and recognition from Wreaths Across America (WAA);
  • Hear a special announcement and recognition from Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF); and
  • Enjoy a special performance from the U.S. Army Field Band’s Six-String Soldiers.
